So I bit the bullet and am now paying n dollars extra for the upgrade from TypePad Basic to Plus.  I did it because I found using the QuickPost thing to get a single trackback to be rather annoying.  I often talk about multiple blogs and would like to be able to trackback them conveniently, and I'd also like to be able to use the extended body feature.  My irritation with QuickPost is what overcame my miserly nature: bravo, TypePad, your clever extortion scheme clearly worked on me!

So now that I can have custom control over my blog, I'm going change the design over the next little while, and maybe get it a convenient domain name.  We'll see.
